Over the two-year experience, increasingly sophisticated techniques and design concepts are introduced. Students complete courses in two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, freehand drawing, technical drawing, furniture history, and crafts business practices. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says.

Chair Katherine Lam is an independent designer/builder whose practice spans over 20 years engaging with furniture and the handmade object, with a focus on design and production. With deep roots in the Arts and Crafts movement, the Furniture program prepares students for versatile careers in a rapidly changing landscape. We teach craft-based methods alongside digital fabrication methods, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.
